"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us." -Joesph Campbell
The ancients looked at the World as a living being, in fact her name is Gaia, and Human beings as the World in miniature. It was believed that the movements of both World and Human beings corresponded, and because of this the destiny could therefore be calculated. Thus Astrology evolved - to interpret the events, and the life of us Human beings by movements of the planets and stars.
This collective knowledge, together with mythology and legend surrounding the mysteries of the Zodiac, offers enlightenment and insight into an absorbing subject.
Astrology is defined as 'the art of divining the fate or destiny of persons from the juxaposition of the Sun, Moon and planets'. In other words, what Man does is influenced by the planets and how he does it is influenced by his Zodiacal sign.
Devised by the Babylonians circa 500 BC, the Zodiac is an intellectual concept. It is envisaged as a band of sky, an imaginary sphere surrounding the Earth on which astronomers locate celestial objects. The Zodiac comprises of 12 signs, and each named after the constellation which once was found in it.
The first six Sun signs of the Zodiac, Aries through to Virgo, relate to the formation of the individual, from the primitive self-drive of Aries to the industrious Virgo, recognising ands adapting to the social sphere.
The final six Sun signs begin with Libra, which desires harmonious relationships on a one-to-one basis. The gradual integration of self into society is revealed until, with Aquarius, the need to be an integral part of society is established. Pisces, however, requires something more than mere socialisation. To achieve fulfillment, Pisces seeks to attain a mystical 'oneness' and a sense of harmony with the Universe.
First or last, the ongoing cycle of life, represented by the Zodiacal wheel, has no begining or end - simply eternal continuity. As Manilius, a poet of the first century AD, writes in his astrological epic Astronomica: 'Being born, we begin to die; and the end depends upon the begining.'
"All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream" -Edgar Allen Poe
